Mini Mid-Winter Japanese Festival

Stonewave Taiko and taiko duo, A.YA from Melbourne are excited to present a mini Mid-Winter Japanese Festival with a variety of activities taking place over 3 days in Bega at the end of June. Enrich your understanding of Japanese culture, have fun, cook & eat, and experience the joy of playing taiko!

DATES & ACTIVITIES

Thursday 29th June:  

  • 9-11am at St John’s Church, Bega: Cooking class with Ayako Fu from Aya.Co Sweets Bakery in Melbourne. We will learn to make and eat Japanese savoury-filled buns (oyaki). $30 pp.  Bookings essential
  • 12-2pm: Cooking class for Stonewave Taiko members.

Friday 30th June

9am-12pm: Japanese activities at the SCPA Markets in Littleton Gardens, Bega. All activities are FREE and will include:

  • origami – the art of Japanese paper folding;
  • 10-11am – Lion’s Head Dance. This is a rare opportunity to see this dance done and to try out the Lion’s Head. Ayako Tsu will be visiting from Melbourne and is able to bring her Lion’s Head with her! Very exciting!
  • After this we will have hands-on taiko workshops for anyone who would like to experience playing the Japanese drums (taiko);
  • Reiko Healy will be bringing a variety of Japanese items for people to try on – kimono, yukata, getta, etc.
  • We will also have Japanese items around to add to the colour of our Japanese Festival.

Saturday 1st July

  • 9:45-11am: Taiko workshop with Ayako Tsu. Learn taiko drumming on the beautiful Japanese drums. All ages (8yo and over) and all abilities. Accessible for those with mobility issues.
