Bega Big Groove 2019 was a stunning success, with over 250 audience members thrilling to a fusion of musical styles and dancing. The show was a spectacular showcase of the region’s eclectic talents, featuring a high-energy mix of Japanese, Spanish, West African, Indigenous and hip hop influences. At one point over 30 taiko drummers were playing on stage, integrating dance, movement and exuberant drumming.
Under the artistic direction of David Hewitt, Stonewave Taiko were joined by the Bembakan African drummers, Djaadjawan Dancers, Far South Flamenco, Flip the Script hip hop crew, rapper Tom “Kunda” Francis, saltwater groover Ben Fowler and bassist Sam Martin, shakuhachi flautist David Dixon, singer Dan Scollay and the talented YuNiOn family. And where else are you likely to see Flamenco dancers backed by taiko drummers?
“It was loud, it was rhythmic and it had the capacity Civic Centre crowd on their feet and dancing into the night” (Bega District News). If you missed this spectacular show, you can look forward to Bega Big Groove 2020 in October next year. In the meantime you can see Stonewave Taiko and many of the other performance groups around the region at various festivals and events.
Stonewave Taiko offer regular weekly classes in Bega and Cobargo, as well as presenting intensive workshops during the year.
